Mercer Island WA Tree Removal Services
On Mercer Island, tree trimming is often less about “shaping” a tree and more about solving a property conflict.
MTS Tree and Landscape handles those problems with selective pruning, not indiscriminate cutting. We have served the Eastside and Seattle since 2005 and provide licensed, bonded, and insured tree care throughout Mercer Island.

What Can Tree Trimming Solve on Your Property?
Good pruning starts with the result you need, then works backward to the cuts that can achieve it.
We provide tree trimming and pruning for:
- Dead, broken, or damaged branches
- Branches touching or hanging over roofs and gutters
- Low limbs restricting driveways, walkways, and yard access
- Selective Lake Washington and territorial view pruning
- Crossing, rubbing, or poorly attached branches
- Crown cleaning and selective thinning
- Crown raising
- Selective crown reduction
- Structural pruning of younger trees
- Corrective pruning after previous poor cuts
- Storm-damaged limbs that can be safely pruned rather than removing the whole tree
We do not approach every tree as though the crown needs to be thinned.
Sometimes one reduction cut solves a roof conflict. Sometimes the useful work is removing deadwood. Sometimes a view can be reopened by selecting only the branches that actually block it.
For broader property work, see our tree and landscape services on Mercer Island.
Tree Trimming vs. Tree Pruning
Homeowners often use trimming and pruning to mean the same thing.
In professional tree care, pruning is the more useful term because it describes selective cuts made for a defined objective.
The important question is not what the service is called. It is what will be cut, why it needs to be cut, and what the tree should look like afterward.
View Pruning for Mercer Island Homes
A better view does not automatically require removing the tree.
Mercer Island's own tree rules recognize windowing, a form of selective pruning intended to increase views and light penetration while retaining the tree's natural form.
Depending on the tree and sightline, view pruning may involve:
- Opening a limited window between selected branches
- Raising part of the lower crown
- Reducing a branch that blocks an important sightline
- Selective thinning where the crown can reasonably support it
- Staging larger changes instead of forcing the entire result in one visit
That last point matters.
Trying to expose an entire view at once can require removing more live canopy than is appropriate. On a mature fir, cedar, maple, or other established tree, we would rather identify the branches actually causing the conflict than thin unrelated parts of the crown.
The City's current Tree FAQ defines windowing as selective branch removal that retains the tree's symmetry and natural form.
You can review the City's Mercer Island Tree Frequently Asked Questions before planning substantial view work.
Roof, Driveway, and Property Clearance
An “overgrown” tree rarely needs a uniform haircut.
Usually, part of the tree has started interfering with how the property is used.
Call us when you notice:
- Branches touching or moving against a roof
- Deadwood above a patio, driveway, or other occupied area
- Low limbs restricting vehicle or pedestrian access
- Branches crossing or rubbing against one another
- Growth extending toward a neighboring structure
- A branch becoming too long or heavily weighted over a target
- Dense regrowth following topping or previous poor pruning
There is no universal number of feet that every branch should be kept from every house.
The correct cut depends on the tree, branch structure, expected movement, roof or structure location, and how much live canopy can reasonably be altered.
That is why we define the pruning objective before deciding how much needs to come off.
Do You Need a Permit to Trim a Tree on Mercer Island?
Normal pruning on a private-property tree can generally be performed without a tree permit when it stays within Mercer Island's normal-maintenance rules.
The City's current guidance says normal pruning is exempt when the work removes no more than 25% of the tree's total leaf area and otherwise meets the City's pruning definitions.
That 25% figure is a maximum for the exemption, not a pruning target. Many mature trees should lose substantially less live canopy.
Review the City's current Mercer Island tree permit guidance before substantial work.
Extra review is important when:
- The proposed work may exceed normal pruning
- The tree is associated with construction or development
- The tree is in or near a regulated critical area
- The work could significantly damage the tree
- The tree may need removal rather than pruning
- The tree is located in the public right-of-way
What About Street and Right-of-Way Trees?
Trees in Mercer Island's public right-of-way are different.
The City requires approval and a permit before residents prune or remove a right-of-way tree. What appears to be part of your front yard may still fall within the public ROW.
Check the City's street tree pruning and removal requirements before arranging work on a tree close to a street, sidewalk, shoulder, or other public area.
Tree Trimming Near Power Lines
Do not treat a branch near electrical lines like ordinary yard pruning.
Puget Sound Energy advises property owners not to attempt vegetation work around energized conductors themselves.
For trees dangerously close to overhead distribution lines, PSE can investigate the situation. Service lines running from a utility pole to a house are handled differently.
If branches are near a service line, PSE can arrange a temporary safety disconnect so a private arborist or tree crew can work safely. PSE currently asks customers to contact the utility at least five business days before planned trimming when a disconnect may be needed.
See PSE's current tree-trimming guidance.
If a line is down, sagging, sparking, or involved in an active tree failure, stay away and contact PSE or emergency services before approaching the tree.
How Much Does Tree Trimming Cost on Mercer Island?
Most residential tree trimming on Mercer Island costs about $400 to $1,200 per tree. Smaller, straightforward pruning jobs may cost less, while large mature firs, cedars, and maples commonly run $1,000 to $2,500. Very large trees or jobs requiring extensive rigging, steep-site access, or work over structures can reach $1,800 to $4,000 or more.
A practical planning range looks like this:
| Type of tree or job | Typical planning range |
|---|---|
| Small ornamental or simple pruning | $250-$600 |
| Medium tree or routine crown work | $400-$1,200 |
| Large mature tree or roof-clearance pruning | $1,000-$2,500 |
| Very large, steep, waterfront, or complex rigging job | $1,800-$4,000+ |
These ranges reflect current Mercer Island, Seattle, and Eastside pricing rather than a fixed rate card. Your written estimate should be based on the pruning actually needed.
The biggest price increases usually come from:
- Tree height and canopy spread
- Number and size of branches
- Deadwood versus live-branch pruning
- Climbing and equipment access
- Rigging requirements
- Slope and narrow access
- Structures or landscaping below the work
- Utility conflicts
- Number of trees
- Debris handling and cleanup
We provide a site-specific estimate once we can define the actual pruning scope.
How We Prune Mature Trees
A mature tree should be pruned for a reason, not because a calendar says it is time to thin the crown.
Before we decide what to remove, we look at the actual objective.
Is there deadwood over an occupied area? Is one limb approaching the roof? Has a storm changed part of the crown? Is a limited sightline blocked? Did previous topping leave dense regrowth?
That determines the work.
Mercer Island's current guidance recognizes crown cleaning, crown raising, crown thinning, and windowing as pruning methods and prohibits topping in situations governed by its tree rules.
The City also encourages residents to use proper pruning practices and ISA-certified arborists for tree maintenance. See its urban forestry and tree-care guidance.
Crown Reduction Is Not Topping
When a branch has become too long or wide for its location, selective reduction may shorten it back to appropriate lateral growth while retaining a functioning crown.
Topping is different. It cuts branches or leaders back indiscriminately and can leave stubs and poorly structured regrowth.
The goal is not simply to make a large tree smaller.
It is to make the cuts needed to resolve the conflict while retaining as much functional canopy and natural structure as the situation allows.
When Should Trees Be Pruned on Mercer Island?
There is no single best month for every tree.
Timing depends on species, condition, pruning objective, and how much live growth is being removed.
Dormant-season pruning can be useful for many deciduous trees because branch structure is easier to see. Other trees may be better pruned at a different stage of growth. Dead or broken branches also should not be left in place simply because the calendar is not ideal.
Mature trees do not automatically need pruning every three or five years.
We would rather reassess what the tree actually needs than put every tree on a fixed trimming cycle.
What If a Branch Was Damaged in a Storm?
A suspended limb, split branch union, or major broken leader is different from routine pruning.
Keep people, vehicles, and pets away from damaged wood that could still move or fall.
We provide 24/7 emergency tree service in King County, including Mercer Island. If electrical lines are involved, contact PSE first.

Mercer Island Tree Trimming FAQs
Can trimming improve my Lake Washington view without removing the tree?
Yes, tree trimming can often improve a Lake Washington view without removing the tree. Selective windowing, crown raising, or targeted reduction can open a specific sightline while retaining most of the canopy. Mercer Island explicitly recognizes windowing as an acceptable pruning method.
How much does tree trimming cost on Mercer Island?
Tree trimming on Mercer Island typically costs about $400 to $1,200 per tree. Smaller, straightforward jobs can cost less, while large mature trees commonly run $1,000 to $2,500. Very large trees, steep lots, waterfront access, or extensive rigging can push the price to $4,000 or more.
Can over-trimming damage a tree?
Yes, over-trimming can damage a tree by removing too much live canopy and changing its structure. Mercer Island's normal-pruning exemption allows removal of no more than 25% of total leaf area, but that is a regulatory maximum, not a recommended pruning target for every tree.
Is cleanup included with tree trimming?
Cleanup is included only when it is listed in the tree-trimming estimate. The written scope should state whether branches will be chipped, larger wood will be hauled or left on site, chips will be removed or retained, and final ground cleanup is included.
How often should a mature tree be trimmed?
Mature trees should generally be trimmed only when there is a specific pruning need, not on a fixed annual schedule. Deadwood, storm damage, roof or driveway clearance, structural defects, and view conflicts are common reasons to prune. A stable mature tree may go years without needing significant work.
Is MTS Tree and Landscape licensed and insured?
